Penny Bottomley

Profile

Penny is a specialist criminal and regulatory practitioner. Her recent instructions include offences of rape, sexual assault, indecent images, fraud, robbery, supply/production of drugs and serious violence. Penny prosecutes and defends in the Crown Courts across the North Eastern Circuit and in the Court of Appeal.

Penny has experience of dealing with vulnerable and child witnesses. She is regularly instructed in cases with defendant’s that suffer from psychiatric illnesses or learning difficulties. Penny also appears in the Youth Court on behalf of juveniles facing serious matters.

Local authorities regularly instruct Penny in regulatory offences including fraud, trademarks and trade descriptions. She is instructed on behalf of local authorities for advice on public interest immunity.

Before joining Fountain Chambers, Penny worked with local solicitors in the North East and Yorkshire and gained a wealth of experience in client care. Her approachable manner with lay clients helps in what are often stressful situations.

Recent Cases

R v. D – Penny was junior defence counsel on a Rape case, which involved expert psychiatric evidence including false memory syndrome and personality disorders.  The counts ranged from historic to present day. The case was successfully defended. 

R v.S Penny appeared before the Court of Appeal in a successful appeal against a sentence for a sexual assault. A custodial sentence was reduced to a community order.  The sexual offender’s prevention order and the disqualification order were both quashed.
