Medomsley Trial Acquittal

Following the lifting of the publicity ban in the Medomsley series of trials, Fountain Chambers can now reveal that Robin Patton, leading Paul Rooney, who were instructed by Angus Westgarth of Westgarth Solicitors, Sunderland, secured the acquittal of a retired senior prison officer who was accused of numerous rapes, attempted rape, assault and misconduct in public office. The prosecution and the other two defendants were represented by Queens Counsel supported by junior counsel.

Robin and Paul were the only team of junior counsel to secure acquittals on all counts, in the three trials involving the Medomsley inquiry, heard before His Honour Judge Crowson at Teesside Crown Court.

The case concerned historical sexual and violence allegations made by former inmates of the Medomsley Detention Centre in County Durham. Durham Police consider this to be the largest inquiry into historic sexual allegations ever undertaken in this country.
