James Colwell


James accepts instructions in all areas of private children and public family law following becoming a tenant after successful completion of his pupillage with Chambers.

Public Law:

James has experience of representing Local Authorities, parents, and children via their Children’s Guardian in public law proceedings. James has been instructed in public law cases encompassing issues ranging from non-accidental injury, interfamilial sexual abuse, substance misuse, parental mental health, and domestic abuse.

James appears at all stages of the public law process from contested interim removal to final hearing. James has also represented extended family members including Grandparents and has represented parents in cases involving applications for leave to oppose an adoption order.

Private Law (children):

Within the area of private law, James has been instructed in several protracted children matters and is proficient in cases in relation to residence and contact disputes.  James has also been instructed in cases of parental alienation necessitating applications for the instruction of court appointed experts and Rule 16.4 Guardians.

James has represented both the applicant and respondent party in various multi-day Finding of Fact Hearings in respect of allegations of sexual assault, non-consensual sex and domestic abuse as well as allegations of physical harm in respect of children.

James has also been instructed in private law cases with an international and cultural element.
