Paul Rooney prosecutes Andrea Cardinale for double murder

Mar 12, 2024

Andrea Cardinale bludgeoned and stabbed to death two of his friends who lived in the same house as him. At the time he was suffering from undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenia. He believed that the two victims were putting evil spells on him, and he could hear their voices in his head telling him to kill them both.

The case involved complex medical reports from two psychiatrists as well as a professor in psychiatry. On review of the psychiatrist evidence the Prosecution agreed that pleas to Manslaughter due to diminished responsibility were appropriate.

Cardinale was made subject to a S37 order with restrictions imposed under S41.

Paul was instructed as junior counsel to Nick Dry Principal Crown Advocate CPS.
