Cole Cockburn

Cole is completing a specialist criminal pupillage under the supervision of Ian West. He is a grade 1 prosecutor, and accepts instructions to prosecute and defend from 4 March 2024.

In his first six, Cole drafted various documents, including Bar Standard initial reviews, bad character applications (and responses), advice notes and openings (for trial and sentence). He also benefitted from advocacy ‘role play’, varying from cross-examinations to speeches (both opening and closing) and sentencing exercises (with Cole’s supervisor doing his best rendition of an evasive witness or difficult judge).

Before pupillage, Cole was a County Court Advocate, representing parties in Small Claims trials (including in consumer protection, contract, negligence and personal injury claims); preliminary matters (such as dispute resolution hearings); and in various applications. The quality of both his advocacy and client-care led to recognition as ‘Advocate of the Month’ on two occasions and his elevation to ‘Senior Advocate’ within 8 months of his first case.

Cole is local to the North East, being schooled in North Tyneside. He studied law at Durham University, graduating in the top 27% of his cohort. His Bar studies were completed with Northumbria University. Here, he particularly excelled in Criminal Professional Practice (with his average mark being 90%). The recordings of his performances are used by the Bar School as examples of good practice.

Outside of work, Cole enjoys fitness, travelling and walks with his dog, Jeff.
